The History of the Old Arcade

Although John Speed’s first map of Cardiff in 1610 indicates buildings on the present site, it wasn’t until almost Victorian times that we see evidence of a tavern. By the late 1820’s the Cardiff Town gaol on St Mary’s Street was too small to deal with the growing population and eventually a new County prison was opened just outside of the town in 1832. The town gaol was still operative for several years after Dic Penderyn was hanged outside the gaol on the gallows in St. Mary’s Street on 13 August 1831. By then the area behind was turned into a new Indoor Market. In 1835, an arcade was built to access the new covered Market from Church Street. This was probably the first arcade in the centre of Cardiff which, by the end of the nineteenth century, was famous for its multitude of arcades.

Alongside the arcade, a public house was built and in 1844 was named the Birdcage: later to be called the Arcade and Post office, the Arcade Vaults and eventually around 1900 – The Old Arcade.

The Landlords

Since the 1960s, there have been several Landlords and landladies who have kindly given their memories to this website

The Characters

Over the years numerous characters regularly visited the Old A. They included the rugby players, footballers, boxers, musicians and the media. Some are captured in the pictures and memorabilia on the Walls.

The Pub

The Old Arcade has changed quite a bit since pre-Victorian times, The entrances and room layouts have changed, and several memorable features have come and gone. Several pictures and explanations help to detail those changes.

Old Arcade Rugby Team

The Old Arcade is the Cardiff HQ for Welsh rugby debates, detractors and advocates alike formed the backbone of the pub community. It was not difficult to spread the word to the locals at least those drawn to the pub after their games on a Saturday afternoon. Numerous players from several clubs, St Peter’s St Albans, Glamorgan Wanderers and Cardiff Civil Service amongst them, became interested in the concept of Sunday rugby and this developed into a fantastic spirit.

Completely impartial and with a motto to match, The Old Arcade RFC took the field for the first time towards the end of the 1978-79 season. We’d already come a long way – multi club representation, but all united to play a running game
